Reflection 6: An Illusion

 Illusion is a human defence mechanism. It is an escape mechanism that the mind uses when reality is just too much too bear, like a shower that is simply too cold. Illusion is comfortable. The hard questions do not have to be asked or answers heard. My mind invented and convinced me what my medical condition was: streptococcus. A bacteria. Something that can be dealt with and then forgotten. That is what I told anyone who asked.

 But it wasn't. That is a falsehood. That comfortable solution proved to be a invention.

 It was melanoma.

 Many parents introduce their children to music at a very young age. Reflection 19: Sometimes the City is hard-hearted

 I am embarrassed to say that sometimes this City is hard-hearted; no, cruel and hard-hearted. This is one of those times. I mean, not the City, that is not specific enough. What I am referring to is the Parking Authority that reports to the City. I really think they are are callous to charge for parking adjacent to the hospital. I mean, come on! Don't you think that sickness especially life-threatening illness is enough to worry about without having to find the change for a parking meter? I do.  When you wait in a clinic to see a member of your the health care team, you cannot help but notice a coin jar sitting in the receptionist counter. Many have a sign "For parking. Help yourself." When I first noticed one, I was curious and then angery! How dare they do that. They are kicking citizens and squeezing their wallet when they are down. 7. Two Kingdoms

The One Ear Man was on the Shanghai "Maglen," a high-speed train going NorthWest from Shanghai and Beijing. The train left Shanghai's Hongqiao Railway Station some time ago. It crossed the Yangtze River, made famous by Chairman Mao Zedong’s swim in 1966. It has been an uneventful trip, and the novel he is reading, A House Divided , by Pearl S. Buck seems a little too heavy in the “navel gazing" and light on the action at this particular point in the story. Buck is rapidly becoming one of his favourites. She has such a passion for the ordinary people, especially those that work the land. She has almost a religious fervour about China at the turn of the 20th century. The One Ear Man has learned so much about China’s history and its people from the setting of the three novels.
